Intended to complement the exhibition, "Robert Mills: designs for democracy," this publication is the outgrowth of an historical editing project, the Papers of Robert Mills, organized in 1984 by the Smithsonian Institution. Contains six essays by the editors of the documentary edition examining the life and work of Robert Mills (1781-1855), one of America's earliest professional architects. Mills studied with James Hoban, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Henry Latrobe. Among his notable buildings and projects are: the Washington Monument in Baltimore (1814-1829), Fireproof Building in Charleston (1822-1827), U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D. C. (1836-1842), Smithsonian Institution (1846), and extension of the U.S. Capitol building from 1850 to 1853.
